Fund Group and Fund Classification
The Fund ChartField is used to track the source of funding. Each Fund has both a Fund Group and a Fund Classification.
Fund Group
The Fund Group is the category of Funds (e.g. general funds, expendable gift funds) that indicates where money came from and/or how money should be handled. Fund Group is indicated by the alpha character at the beginning of the five-digit Fund. The Fund Group does not indicate the degree of external restriction, internal designation, or reporting requirements of a Fund.
Fund Classification
Fund Classification is an attribute for all Funds that provides a general indication of the degree of external restriction, internal designation or reporting requirements of a Fund. Funds are classified in five tiers:
-
Unrestricted
-
University Designated
-
Departmentally Restricted
-
Purpose Restricted – Eligible for Transfer
-
Purpose Restricted – Ineligible for Transfer

How Group and Classification Work Together
Fund Group and Fund Classification work together to provide information on the source, use, and restrictions of a Fund. This information can provide guidance on how to move money as well as which Fund should be spent first.
