What You Should Know

If you are an employee and are unable to perform your job due to a work-related illness or injury, Princeton University provides you with worker’s compensation benefits. If you are benefits-eligible and unable to perform your job due to a non-work related injury, illness, or disability, the University provides you with disability benefits.

The University’s Workers’ Compensation Plan provides faculty and staff with 70 percent of gross wages in effect at the time of the injury or illness. This benefit is paid when the employee has been authorized out of work by the approved physician and continues until they are returned to work or determined to have reached maximum medical improvement. The 70 percent base benefit is exempt from, or not subject to, federal income tax. Union employees should review their collective bargaining agreement for confirmation of their rate in pay.

The University’s Long Term Disability Plan is another income replacement program that covers benefits-eligible employees only. If approved, the Long-Term Disability Plan provides 60 percent of annual base salary, up to a maximum of $10,000 per month, when combined with Social Security and any workers’ compensation benefits.

Human Resources, Stacey Burd, Disability Manager, coordinates the administration of Long Term Disability Plan, and  partners with Risk Management to coordinate Workers' Compensation claims.

Workers' Compensation

Workers’ compensation provides payment for medical treatment, wage replacement, and permanent disability compensation to employees who suffer job-related injury or illness, and death benefits to the beneficiaries of workers who have died as a result of their employment.

If you suffer a work-related injury that keeps you from working, you can receive workers’ compensation benefits no matter who was at fault. In exchange for these benefits, which are governed by state law, you cannot bring a civil action against your employer for pain and suffering or other damages, except under certain circumstances. If you are Injured on the Job

If you are injured, notify your supervisor as soon as possible. If you need medical treatment, contact Employee Health Services or if necessary, go to an emergency medical facility.

Long Term Disability

The Long Term Disability Plan provides a wage replacement benefit for eligible faculty and staff who have been disabled for more than 26 weeks. If the disability is work related, benefits provided by this plan may coincide with Workers' Compensation plan benefits. If the disability is not work related, this plan provides benefits after short-term disability benefits end.

The Long Term Disability Plan pays a portion of your income while you are disabled. The amount you would receive is based on the amount earned before the disability began.

Our long term disability coverage is insured with Prudential, with premiums being paid in total by the University without contributions from eligible employees. Prudential decides all questions relating to benefit coverage, manages claims, and provides benefit payments according to the plan provisions. A summary plan booklet that describes benefits, limitations, exclusions, and special provisions is available to all faculty and staff members from human resources.

Re-Employment After a Long Term Disability Absence

The University is not obligated to hold your job if your absence extends beyond 26 weeks. However, you may apply for other available positions comparable to the one held prior to an absence.

Vacation Credit

Vacation is not earned during any part of an absence of more than 26 weeks.

Other Benefits

While out on long term disability, employee benefits such as the Princeton University Retirement Plan, Basic Life Insurance, and others continue. At the time of approval for long term disability, a report explaining the status of your benefits is sent from the Office of Human Resources. Claims Coordination

If you are eligible for long term disability coverage, you will receive an application packet in the mail from Human Reources once you have been receiving Workers’ Compensation benefits or short term disability benefits for three months. Human Resources will provide assistance in completing the application as well as submitting the application materials to the long term disability carrier. To expedite the processing of your claim, carefully follow all instructions on the application claim form and answer all questions completely.
