What You Should Know

When are rebudgets required?

In general, requests for rebudgets are limited to those that require sponsor approval for the following circumstances: 

  • Change in the scope or the objective of the project
  • Change in the key person specified in the application or award documents
  • The absence for more than three months, or a 25% reduction in time devoted to the project by the approved PI
  • Rebudgets that exceed 25% of the total award amount

Important Note: Rebudgets that don’t meet the requirements above but involve unusual costs or circumstances should be presented to Sponsored Research Accounting (SRA) to determine allowability and whether sponsor approval should be solicited. 

Requesting Award Rebudgets

Rebudgets must be requested via completion of the OPAR (ORPA Prior Approval Request) form, and then reviewed by ORPA who will submit requests to the sponsor for approval. Once approved, ORPA will update the budget categories to reflect the revised allocation amount.
