During this session, we will explain how financial decision making is governed at Princeton. We will discuss the University Operating Budget to understand the ways that revenues are budgeted and spent, explore the endowment, how it is managed, and distributed, and introduce a financial manager’s role in stewarding their financial resources.

During this session we will provide an overview of the Finance & Treasury departments and their functional responsibilities. We will review and highlight F&T’s collaboration with key campus partners and highlight key stewardship responsibilities of Financial Managers. We will then review the F&T Resources available to departments.

During this session, we will define what a policy is and the benefits of having policies. We will discuss the most commonly referenced University financial policies and review case studies on how best to follow policies in a variety of situations.  We will then have time to answer any specific questions you may have regarding specific policy questions in your department.

This session provides a general overview of accounting and the specific terms associated with accounting concepts. We will review the accounting lifecycle and explore how expenses are accounted for at the University. We will then discuss how the information entered by departments informs the University financial statement creation process.

During this session, participants will learn the framework of internal controls and their role in the internal control process. We will review how internal controls work, examine the significance of policies at Princeton, discuss common scenarios that departments face, and help participants understand the resources available to them.

During this session, participants will be given a quick refresher of the Prime Financial Information Warehouse (IW). We will then provide an overview of the reports in the Financial Management portfolio and discuss Financial Management reports best practices.

During this session, we will discuss the Operating Budget schedule and key University departments involved in the budgeting process. We will explain the funding differences between Academic and Administrative departments and other endowed funds, as well as review planning expectations/responsibilities of Financial Managers and how they relate to stewardship. We will then discuss how to develop an annual and/or multiyear departmental plan, forecasting for future years, and provide best practices on how to manage an annual plan.

During this session, we will provide an overview of Procurement at Princeton - what they do and their role in the Procurement process. We’ll review the benefits and purpose of sourcing, define when a contract is/ is not needed and when to engage with Procurement. We’ll outline the different types of contracts and the process for using existing contracts.

During this session, you will learn useful tips and discuss the power of data storytelling. We will discuss how to tell insightful stories with data, impress your audience, and get your data questions answered.

During this session, the Risk Management team will provide participants with a better understanding of risk management at Princeton. They will review their areas of responsibility and discuss how various programs are managed across campus - University Insurance Programs, Workers’ Compensation Claims, Loss Prevention and Control Activities, and Benefits Program and Student Health Plan.

During this session we will review what debt is, why we use it at Princeton, and how it is used. We will also discuss the various types of debt, overall debt management, and the bond market.

This session will discuss information warehouse reports specifically relating to sponsored research. Participants will learn about how to get information on departmental sponsored research and the best ways to use reports for award management.
